Dual Protect Pro™ – Place with Purpose. Dispose with Confidence.

This critical moment often overlooked is where safety, awareness and design must come together. With our Sharpsafe® containers, we’ve made it our mission to rethink how sharps are disposed of, with innovations that go beyond compliance to truly protect healthcare professionals and the environment.

Our 5L and 7L Sharpsafe® containers are purposely designed to encourage horizontal filling, a safer and more efficient method of disposal. At the heart of this design is the Dual Protect Pro™, the first integrated needle guide of its kind. This feature promotes conscious disposal, helping to reduce the complacency – a known contributor to sharps injuries.

By encouraging mindful habits, we’re not just improving safety – we’re also enhancing container performance and supporting sustainability goals.

Even the best designed safety features rely on correct usage. The Dual Protect Pro™ is engineered to support horizontal placement of sharps – a method that promotes safer, more controlled disposal and helps maximise container capacity.

A few tips for safer sharps disposal:

  • Guide the sharp in gently, using a horizontal motion
  • Avoid vertical drops – they can reduce accuracy and control
  • Use the temporary closure position – your container should never be left open position

Disposing of sharps isn’t just about safety – it’s also about efficiency. Our internal testing has shown that mindful placement of sharps, especially when using the lid correctly, can significantly increase container capacity:

  • The new 5L container holds 67% more than the previous 4L
  • The redesigned 7L container offers a 13% increase in capacity compared to its predecessor

These improvements mean fewer container changes, reduced clinical waste, and a lower environmental footprint, all while maintaining the highest safety standards.

The Dual Protect Pro™ is more than a feature – it’s a statement. Designed as an additional safety measure, it goes beyond regulatory requirements and standards like the ISO 23907-1:2019 to support healthcare professionals in the moments that matter most.

One of the key disadvantages of an open aperture on a sharps container is the increased risk of accidental spillage if the container is knocked over while in use. Without a protective barrier or directional entry, an open aperture leaves the contents exposed, making it easier for sharps to fall out, posing a serious safety hazard to healthcare staff and patients. This design can also contribute to improper disposal habits, as it lacks the guidance needed to encourage safe, horizontal placement of sharps, further increasing the risk of injury and contamination.

Although not mandatory in the ISO 23907-1:2019 standard, we believe that a built in safety shield offers additional protection should an accident occur. Safety shouldn’t be optional, it should be built into the container design.
